The Method

A testable way of reading organizations
as systems, not collections of problems.

by Brooke Erickson

The Method is the working stance behind Brooke Erickson's Organizational Intelligence Platform. It is built from four anchor principles, one diagnostic loop, ten signals, and a curated framework and research library that every reading traces back to.

This is a new way of looking at organizations. You do not have to adopt it wholesale. Provide the evidence, see the read, and test whether it explains something you already sense but could not name.

Philosophy

Four principles the Method is grounded in.

Each principle states how organizations work, the research standard that validates it, and how that standard shows up in the platform.

Interdependence

Organizations are not made of separate functions. They are made of relationships that pull on one another — so one decision reshapes trust, capacity, learning, and priorities at the same time.

Research standard

Every claim in the Method must be traceable to research on how one part of a system reshapes another.

In the platform: Evidence intake never scores a signal in isolation. It always reads what that signal is pulling on.

Emergence

Culture, safety, and performance do not live in a department. They emerge from how the parts interact.

Research standard

We privilege research on system behavior over research on individual traits or isolated interventions.

In the platform: The Read surfaces the pattern between signals, not the signals alone, so the whole becomes visible.

Gravity

History, incentives, and identity quietly outweigh most change efforts. Naming that gravity is often the intervention.

Research standard

We include longitudinal and failure-case evidence, not only success stories, so the invisible field of forces becomes legible.

In the platform: The Advisor names what is already pulling before proposing what to push against.

Cadence

Organizations reveal themselves across cycles, not in a single moment. A one-time reading is a photograph; repetition is the movie.

Research standard

The corpus is never finished. It is re-read and updated as the field evolves and new evidence appears.

In the platform: The Loop is designed for repetition, not one-shot fixes, so intervention becomes iteration.

The Loop

Read. Interpret. Act. Re-read.

The same loop runs in two places: the user's journey through the platform, and our discipline for keeping the research corpus alive.

01
Read
For you

Provide the evidence. Twenty-five mixed-modality items surface the ten signals in about fifteen minutes.

For the corpus

We read new research against the Method's standards and admit only what holds up across contexts.

02
Interpret
For you

See the Read. Lifts, drags, weak couplings, and confidence levels turn the read into a system-level picture.

For the corpus

We interpret whether a new study changes how a signal is weighted, read, or connected to other signals.

03
Act
For you

Get Monday moves from the Advisor. Each move is concrete, evidence-grounded, and timed to the next seven days.

For the corpus

We act by updating frameworks, retire claims the evidence no longer supports, and add new failure cases when they change the field.

04
Re-read
For you

Refresh the evidence. Longitudinal tracking shows what shifted, what didn't, and why — so intervention becomes iteration.

For the corpus

We re-read the corpus on a regular cadence, because organizations reveal themselves across cycles, not in a single moment.

The Ten Signals

Ten interconnected reads of a living organization.

Not a scorecard. A minimal sufficient set — the smallest number of signals that, together, describe how an organization actually behaves under pressure.

Information Flow
12% weight

How effectively knowledge, feedback, context, and truth move through the organization.

Reads Whether leaders see the same picture the edges of the org are already living in.
Relational Trust
13% weight

The strength of trust, psychological safety, credibility, and collaboration across the organization.

Reads Whether trust is thickly distributed or concentrated in a few key ties.
Organizational Energy
12% weight

The collective engagement, motivation, and capacity for effort — versus depletion, disengagement, and burnout.

Reads Whether the system is generating energy or quietly spending it down.
Alignment
13% weight

The degree to which strategy, priorities, decisions, and daily work reinforce one another.

Reads Whether the same north star is legible from the exec team down to the edges.
Learning
9% weight

How the organization metabolizes experience, feedback, and failure into changed behavior.

Reads The pace at which surprise turns into a durable update.
Adaptability
9% weight

The organization's ability to sense change, adjust course, and reshape itself without breaking form.

Reads The size of the change the system can carry before it starts to tear.
Identity
8% weight

What the organization actually is in practice — the shared purpose, values, and behavior the system rewards.

Reads The gap between what the org says it stands for and what it enacts.
Influence
8% weight

How power, decision rights, and voice are distributed — where authority sits versus where information sits.

Reads The map of real power, not the org chart.
Attention and Capacity
8% weight

The finite attention, focus, and energy the system can allocate — and the slack it has left for anything new.

Reads Whether the org is producing performance or extracting it from future capacity.
Friction
8% weight

Structural, procedural, or behavioral barriers that make work harder than it needs to be.

Reads The friction the system has learned to route around instead of resolve.

How We Reason

A read is a claim under uncertainty, so it is required to say how strong it is and what would change it.

Every explanation the platform produces sits on a rung of the causal ladder and carries a three-part confidence grammar. Rival readings are shown next to each other, and the one you favor becomes the standing read until an intervention displaces it.

The causal ladder
  • Association

Two signals move together. Useful for attention, never for action on its own.

  • Mechanism

You can name how one signal produces the other, and the mechanism survives contact with the evidence you already have.

  • Intervention tested

A change was made on purpose and the read moved. This is the only rung that earns the word 'because'.

Three-part confidence
  • Evidence

How much real evidence stands behind the claim, and whether the signals that matter are readable, emerging, contested, or not yet observed.

  • Model

How well the framework being applied actually explains what is observed here, not in general.

  • Judgment

How much the leader still has to supply. The platform names this out loud rather than hiding it inside a number.

Memory constrains the next read

Corrections, retired explanations, and reviewed interventions are carried forward. The Advisor cannot quietly re-propose a read the organization already retired.

Open Memory
What the platform refuses

It will not rate a person, predict an individual's behavior, or state a cause it has not tested. Where a signal is not yet observed, it says so instead of filling the gap.

The Framework Library

Every finding traces to a framework. Every framework traces to research.

Two groups: native frameworks Brooke authored inside the Method, and drawn-from frameworks the Method reads through — Edmondson, Meadows, Kahneman, Heifetz, Nonaka, Grant, Brown, Gladwell, Argyris, Schein, and the growing Method tradition among them.
